Chelsea Christmas lights in 2014 came with market food, live reindeer, a stage countdown and a choir singing through the rain. This Roberts London visit takes in Sloane Square, the King’s Road and Duke of York Square as the festive lights are switched on.
First published on 9 November 2014, the film records the event and decorations from that season.
A rainy Christmas gathering in Chelsea

Umbrellas are a constant presence in this Chelsea visit. The film moves from the daytime market to an evening crowd around an outdoor stage, with rain shaping the experience of the lights event. People gather beneath the trees to watch the programme continue.
I introduce the visit from Sloane Square, having come to see the Christmas lights switched on. The original description also places the walk along the King’s Road and in Duke of York Square, bringing the neighbouring shopping areas into one festive outing.
Partridges at Duke of York Square market

Before the switch-on, I stop at the market in Duke of York Square. In the narration I mention the regular weekend market before heading towards Partridges, where duck confit is being served from a large steaming pan.
The stall has a red canopy, strings of small lights and a sign advertising the duck confit sandwich. It is a brief food stop within the wider visit, with the camera recording the cooking and the people working behind the counter.
Reindeer and a Santa’s grotto

There are live reindeer at the event too. The footage shows them standing in a straw-covered enclosure, with handlers nearby and visitors gathered along the white fence. It is a different scene from the later lights and music.
I mention a pop-up Santa’s grotto in the narration, then return to the reason for the visit: the Christmas lights. These attractions are part of the particular 2014 event recorded here.
The countdown to the lights

At the stage, the crowd is asked to watch the screen for a countdown. The camera catches the large numbers behind the people on stage, with blue light across the canopy and equipment. The countdown builds towards the moment of the switch-on.
Applause and Christmas greetings follow. The film stays among the spectators, so the stage is seen through the gathering rather than from an empty front-row position. It preserves the feel of watching the event in the rain.
Chelsea illuminated after dark

After the countdown, the camera turns towards the decorations. White lights cover a building façade, while illuminated shapes hang among the nearby trees. Bright shop windows and street lamps fill out the view below.
The contrast with the earlier market scenes is clear. Daylight has given way to dark branches, glowing decorations and wet surfaces. The lights become the main feature of the streets around the square.
The fountain in Sloane Square

A short sequence pauses at the fountain in Sloane Square. Water falls into the basin, with fallen leaves caught along the edge and the surrounding streets reflected nearby. The festive lights remain visible around the square.
This is one of the quieter moments in the film. Away from the stage, the fountain and passing street scene give a wider sense of Chelsea on the evening of the event.
The choir carries on in the rain

The choir performance forms a substantial part of the film. Singers stand close together beneath the stage canopy, holding their music in blue light, while the audience watches from under umbrellas. The camera moves from a wide view to closer shots of the performers.
I introduce the choir before letting the performance continue. The long sequence gives the music and the crowd time on screen, extending the record beyond the brief moment when the lights are switched on.
A wet walk beneath the Christmas lights

The closing street views show traffic, lit trees and reflections across the wet pavement. The rain remains part of the evening right to the end, catching the light from vehicles and shops along the route.
