Selfridges Christmas Windows 2016: Shine On! and Bad Santa

Selfridges’ Christmas windows have long turned a walk along Oxford Street into a piece of seasonal theatre. In December 2016, the department store’s Shine On! campaign gave that tradition a particularly extravagant twist. Santa was no longer simply delivering presents: he had become the star of a surreal, fashion-led night out.

A Christmas walk along Oxford Street

This Roberts London archive film begins among the crowds and lights of Oxford Street before approaching Selfridges. The busy pavement, buses and illuminated façades establish the setting: central London in the weeks before Christmas, when the windows became both advertising and a free public spectacle.

The 2016 installation was called Shine On!. It was widely described at the time as an irreverent “Bad Santa” story, but the humour came through fashion rather than menace. Santa appeared in sequins and designer clothes, surrounded by glamorous party guests, champagne, poodles and glittering decorations.

Santa joins the party

The windows unfold like episodes in one long night. Their cast of mannequins is dressed for celebration, posed in carefully lit scenes that sit somewhere between a fashion editorial and a stage set. Santa’s familiar red outfit is reworked with the same theatrical confidence as the designer clothing around him.

Champagne and eveningwear turn Santa’s journey into a fashionable party.

Champagne, eveningwear and exaggerated poses make the display feel knowingly excessive. The campaign embraced the sparkle and indulgence of the season, transforming the traditional journey from the North Pole into a fashionable social circuit.

Fashion, humour and spectacle

Selfridges used the windows to present fashion with a sense of humour. Instead of a conventional snowy grotto, the displays mixed recognisable Christmas symbols with contemporary styling. Santa could be a host, traveller or unexpected guest, while presents became graphic props suspended within carefully controlled compositions.

The windows send Santa travelling with poodles as the story becomes increasingly surreal.

The poodles are among the details that give the sequence its eccentric character. Each scene rewards a pause, with smaller jokes and styling choices appearing behind the main figures. From the pavement, the reflective glass also captures passing traffic and Oxford Street itself, briefly merging the staged fantasy with the real city.

Turning the windows into a Christmas disco

Light was central to the campaign. More than a hundred mirrored and disco balls were used across the installation, scattering highlights around the figures and giving the displays their Shine On! identity. Soundtracks were also part of the presentation, played through a system designed to make the window glass vibrate and carry music towards the street.

The dinner scene continues the impression that Santa has abandoned his usual timetable for one remarkable evening. It is lavish and deliberately artificial, using the language of luxury retail while keeping the central idea playful enough for families and passers-by.

A record of Christmas in London in 2016

Window displays are temporary by design. They occupy a prominent place in the city for a few weeks and then disappear, which makes this film a useful record of Oxford Street at a particular moment. It preserves not only the creative campaign but also the crowds, reflections, traffic and surrounding Christmas lights that formed part of the experience.

By the end of the walk, the windows have moved through fashion, comedy and full-scale disco spectacle. The camera returns to Oxford Street, where the wider canopy of lights places Selfridges back within London’s West End Christmas landscape.

Seen again years later, Shine On! remains a confident example of festive visual merchandising: witty, glamorous and unmistakably theatrical. It also captures the simple pleasure of stopping at a shop window on a December evening and finding an entire story waiting behind the glass.
