Christmas is calling light installation spanning Oxford Street in 2018

Oxford Street Christmas Lights in 2018: The Switch-On Night

Oxford Street’s Christmas lights returned on the evening of 6 November 2018, bringing the first major festive illumination of the season to London’s best-known shopping street. Roberts London was there shortly after the switch was made, recording the lights, shop windows, traffic and crowds as the West End moved into Christmas.

The resulting film is a compact archive of Oxford Street at a particular moment. The street was busy and brightly dressed, but the launch was noticeably quieter than the large road-closing switch-on events of earlier years. There was no single celebrity guest at the centre of the evening. Instead, the lights appeared above an Oxford Street that remained open to buses, taxis and shoppers.

The walk begins beneath Oxford Street’s familiar 2018 installation. Suspended globes, stars and bright lines crossed above the traffic, with illuminated panels carrying the message “Christmas is calling”. The scheme was already known to Londoners: plans for a new display had been delayed alongside the postponed opening of Crossrail, so the established falling-snowflake design returned for another season.

The film records a street still in motion. Red buses pass the illuminated shopfronts, shoppers gather at crossings and sections of pavement are screened by temporary barriers. That mixture of celebration and ordinary city work gives the footage much of its value. It is not a polished promotional view but Oxford Street as it looked on the night.

Selfridges Rocks Christmas

Selfridges provided the most theatrical shopfront of the walk. Its 2018 theme, Selfridges Rocks Christmas, reimagined the festive season through rock-and-roll styling, performance and saturated colour. The exterior announcement and windows used the visual language of posters, stages, dressing rooms and extravagant music costumes.

Seen through the camera, the windows shift from the broad sweep of Oxford Street to a series of vivid little stages. Pink light, metallic curtains and fashion displays turn each section into part concert set and part Christmas fantasy.

St Christopher’s Place and South Molton Street

The route briefly leaves the scale and traffic of Oxford Street for two smaller decorated passages. St Christopher’s Place is picked out by suspended lights above its shopfronts, while South Molton Street forms a narrower corridor of garlands and glowing ornaments.

South Molton Street offered a more intimate illuminated passage away from Oxford Street.

These side streets give the film a useful change of pace. Oxford Street’s installation was designed to be read across a broad, heavily trafficked route; the smaller streets placed their decorations closer to pedestrians and the upper floors of the buildings.

A record of Oxford Street retail in 2018

The film also preserves a retail landscape that has since changed. The former Debenhams flagship appears as one of the brightest façades on the route, wrapped in white lights. Boots, His Master’s Voice and the Disney Store follow as Barry moves east towards Oxford Circus.

Retail conditions were an unavoidable part of the atmosphere in 2018. Department stores and established chains were under pressure, while extensive street works complicated the view of some Christmas windows. The film captures that uncertainty without losing sight of the pleasure people still found in the lights.

Oxford Circus beneath the lights

The final section reaches Oxford Circus, where crowds pause beneath the illuminated spans and phones are raised for photographs. Traffic continues through the junction while pedestrians find their position beneath the best view of the installation.

Recorded at the beginning of the Christmas season, the film now works as more than a tour of festive decorations. It preserves the storefronts, street works, buses and public response surrounding the 2018 switch-on. Together with the earlier Roberts London Oxford Street films, it forms part of a continuing visual record of how the West End presented Christmas from year to year.
