A Friday night in London does not need a complicated plan. This evening begins at Temple, follows the Strand to the Royal Courts of Justice, crosses into Covent Garden and finishes with dumplings, Chinese New Year lanterns and a film in Soho.

Temple and the Royal Courts of Justice

Temple station is a useful starting point for an evening on foot. The Embankment is close by, while a short walk uphill reaches the Strand and Fleet Street. London is changing from the working day into the evening: offices are emptying, theatres are filling and the traffic is beginning to glow under the streetlights.

The meeting point is the Royal Courts of Justice. Its Gothic Revival frontage has dominated this stretch of the Strand since the nineteenth century. At night, the arches and stonework give the building an even more theatrical presence.

Covent Garden after dark

From the Strand, the route turns west into Covent Garden. The market building, theatres, pubs and street performers make it one of central London’s natural evening meeting places. It can be busy, but the energy is part of the attraction.

Chinese New Year in Chinatown

The evening continues through the West End to London’s Chinatown. Chinese New Year had recently been celebrated, and the red lanterns were still suspended above Gerrard Street. They transform the street after dark, reflecting in shop windows and lighting the crowds below.

Dumplings at Jen Café

Dinner begins at Jen Café, the small Chinatown café long recognised for dumplings made in the front window. The order is simple: plates of freshly cooked dumplings, dipping sauce and mugs of green tea. This is fast, informal London eating at its best.

Afterwards, there is time to look around the bakeries and dessert counters. Chinatown works particularly well as an unplanned food destination because one dish can lead naturally to another.

A film at Curzon Soho

The final destination is Curzon Soho on Shaftesbury Avenue. Its central position makes the cinema an easy conclusion to an evening that has crossed several distinct parts of London without ever needing a taxi or a rigid itinerary.
